Does anyone know how to rip just the sound from a DVD?

I can rip the whole thing leaving me with the video and a massive wav file of the soundtrack which I then need to edit to get the bit I want (anyone know a good wav editor BTW?) But that takes hours (the ripping rather than the editing), there must be a way to just extract the sound.

I don't really know how audio ripping from a DVD works but is this any help? http://www.afterdawn.com/software/specific.cfm/280
It says it's "a tool for extracting the AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio from a DVD VOB file and converting it into a WAV-format" - don't know if that means you have to copy it to hard drive first or not - were you planning to rip it straight from DVD?

What you suggest is pretty much what I am doing at the moment, but it takes hours to rip the audio out of the VOB file (I will try that software to see if it is faster, it might let me rip a chapter at a time) I thought it might be possible to just rip the bit of audio I want straight from the DVD but I think it might not be possible.

Thanks for the link

Oh right, I wondered if you could just rip the audio straight from the VOB on the DVD, it seems not. Or is it even a VOB on the DVD? I don't know much about this as you can see. :lol

Yeah it is VOB on the dvd I don't know if you can rip the audio off it though. I now have the file I wanted anyway. Out of curiosity i started converting Gladiator to Mpeg2 format. it was 19 hours in with 48 hours to go when I gave up!

Is it just a small section of the sound track you want or the entire lot?

Just a small bit, which I went the long way round to get, ripped the whole DVD ripped the soundtrack out of it (1.4GB wav file) and edited out the bit I wanted. Would have been easier to bring the player upstairs and plug a phono socket into the sound card, still it's all a learning experience:lol

When I want to record a small section of a soundtrack from a DVD I double click on the speaker in the system tray to bring up the mixer (Depending on what sound card you have this may be different). Click on the OPTIONS menu and select PROPERTIES. In the "Adjust volume for" section select "Recording" and check all the boxes in the "Show the following volume controls" and click OK. This will bring up the mixer for all the recording channels. On my set up if I select "Stereo Mixer" my sound recording software will then record from this channel, which seems to be the channel my DVD software plays its sound through.

To record the sound I use Sound Forge. However, I would have thought that any software would work in the same manner.

Not 100% sure why this works but is does on my set up. Depending on your set up I would expect a few things to be different but a similar set up should give you what you want. You may have to experiment a little. A word of warning, all the bleeps and pings windows makes will also be recorded, so you have to make sure do don't make any unwanted sounds.

Sorry just noticed your DVD player is not in your computer. You will need a DVD drive for this to work.

Ta, if I ever need to do it again I'll give it a go.
I must say that the long way round gave excellent results sound wise.

I have a DVD drive, i just couldn't figure out a way of recording the sound off it.
