AOL one of the best ISP’s there is any comments?

As you have not had any replies to this thread can I assume that it must be.

I shall be giving it a months trial as soon as 24-7freecall decides what they are doing. Then I will post my opinions.

Kind Regards
:D Percy ;)

If you read comments posted in Usenet you might think they are the worst isp ever, but most of those comments are posted by people who don't use Aol but 'court' popularity by doing the fashionable thing, that is 'knock' Aol although in most cases they are only repeating what a friend of a friend told them and they think it makes them look 'net savvy'

If you ask people who actually use Aol (such as in this forum) then you will (most of the time) get a very different picture.

Aol are not perfect but from my point of view they are the best isp I have used to date!

i have said it once and i will say it again i have swallowed my pride on this but AOL are the best ISP i have used to date, so basically i second what druid said.

the reason why i swallow me pride is lol, cos i was one of the users the heavily dissed the software saying it buggered up me pc, when as a matter of fact my pc was incorrectly configured meaning to an inaccurate installation of the software.

Also the content on it as far as i am concerned is second to none. everything is brilliant i like it a lot every is accessible within the software and the great thing is it is hard to recieve a virus thru email with ie being instantaneous. sort of like webmail.

Yes it is fashionable and in vogue to be bashing AOL, it’s just like sheep follow the flock? But then this does not just pertain to AOL – but life as a whole.
People should try and be individualists – some are born as such, renegades, outcasts, never popular. It has always been so.

AOL are certainly the most reliable ISP I have used.I was (like many)a bit put off by their software at first, but now enjoy using it!
Connections are pretty good. All in all its the best ISP for me. I am not a big online gamer however, and it appears AOL is not so good in this regard.

Was with Aol for over two months and liked the service.
Except the Blue Screens I kept on getting !
Help line tried everything to cure them, but with out success.
Eventually cancelled AOL membership and joined BtAnytime.
But alas the blue screens continued even after re-format of HD.
Started looking around and with trial and error found that it was McAffee Anti virus causing the problem, removed it and blue screens have vanished and have never been seen again!
Would have returned to AOL but I did not want the hassle of changing email address again, should ever Bt become unreliable Aol will be my first choice. IMHO there are only two ISP's and they are BT & AOL, both reliable and good value for money.

Dave....

Although no ISP is perfect, and neither is AOL, I think that it is the best *value for money* provider going. Most of their staff are always curteous, and will do their best to sort out any problems - a good customer service is always a pleasure to see ;)

Druid, stop chatting and go and blow your stacks:D

In the interests of balance:

I don't like AOL at all (and I have tried them as some of you may remember)

Can't do ICS properly
Can't play games
Must use their software

If none of the above bother you then I can see how it would be OK

Well I have to admit to being distinctly AOL sceptic before, but now I have used it I have to admit it works extremely well and you really can't fault their customer service - freecall line, always courteous and helpful, will even walk you through it if needs be.

I don't use their desktop and always minimise back to IE but I think my kids use it. I have never even bothered to look at AOL e-mail so I don't know what that's like. I don't play games, so that isn't an issue with me.

But I do get connected first dial-up every time and there aren't many ISP's that do that. Plus with AOL 24/7 means exactly that - if you are daft enough to use it for 24hours on-the-trot you won't get booted.

OK. I am a convert.

true, i do have to admit that if someone needs computer help, there is nothing better than a freephone number, rather than the typical 0898 ones ;) .....

What i dont agree with, cant remember if this is the right thread or not, but what the hell ;) .... is that AOL is good for people who want to use the "information superhighway" .. if you actually want to use the internet, than AOL is not for you. As you see many people "slagging" off aol, this is usually because they are tech-savvy and expect more from an ISP, ( i Use demon when i want to actually do something apart from browsing). That is it basically, if you want to browse at off-peak times, than AOL is your choice. However, if you do not need technical service and need a little more from your ISP, i.e nearyl everything apart from "chat rooms" and "browsing" .. then choose a proper ISP.

Hi Oldboy and Mrs Miniver

No disrespect Neon, but I 'don’t know' what you are on about, Aol is a proper isp and I can do anything whilst connected to Aol that I do or did with other isp's, the only difference is that I can do it anytime for as long as I like without fear of running up a huge tel bill! I also don't understand why you say, "browse at off-peak times" Aol is ok any time!

Best regards John.

Dave I reckon you are still carrying a candle for Aol, you really wish you were still with us, instead of that band of ruffians over at BT :)
Incidentally I see that the top man at BT may get a £3,000,000 bonus, a bit 'rich' IMHO considering the huge debt BT has and the fact that the shareholders are being denied a dividend, still suppose you are helping pay his £3,000,000 Oldboy :)

John.

elcid123
13th May 2001, 17:42
I too don’t know what on earth you’re talking about either? AOL can do anything that all the ISP’s that I have been with can do, and that’s quite a few. Indeed quote : “if you actually want to use the internet, than AOL is not for you.” “expect more from an ISP” - what more? “whi Use demon en i want to actually do something apart from browsing).” “if you want to browse at off-peak times, than AOL is your choice. choose a proper ISP” end quote.
I’ve read some criticisms of ISP’s in my time, but I think this one deserves an award.
What were you on NeonBoy – whatever it was, make mine a double!

14th May 2001, 07:54
I've been with AOL about 4 months now (the FRIACO package) and have had very few problems.

I do get random cutoffs from time to time, but I just dial in again.

When I first started using AOL I had to set ZoneAlarm to medium and couldn't retrieve e-mails using POP3 access, but now I can surf with ZoneAlarm on maximum and retrieve e-mails (only on the first dial up number (?) though). I don't know why though, but I'm not complaining.

Speeds are good for me, but not as fast as Freeserve Anytime.

My innate sense of humour comes to the fore at the most unexpected times, which is great, cos it means even on the rare occasions I feel a bit down, I can ususally find something to smile about.(like now for instance, think I have spelt occasions wrong, can never remember if it is one s or two and am too lazy to find our) :lol

Anyway, welcome to the board, always nice to meet new people.

Hello Mark (eggy), Glad you made it to the new forum and I am 'chuffed' that you are finding Aol a little better.

Dave (oldboy) you lost any rights to Connie when you left Aol for BTi, She is mine now! I saw a photo of her in the papers, without her Aol clothes on (no don't get exited Dave, she had other clothes on) and I thought she was a very attractive 'bird'.

Canning it, Yes it is odd about Zone alarm, sometimes it works fine on the high settings but occasionally I have to start Aol with ZA set at Medium, I can then change it back to High after connecting, I will say however that I have found that the latest version (ver 2.6) seems much better and always works on the high setting.

My god who mentioned Ann Robinson? What’s this thread coming to? Next thing it’ll be the knickers fetish again!
Mind you would you believe quite a lot fancy Ann Robinson? It must be sado-masochism, I think many are young lads wanting to be dominated and get their pants pulled down in anticipation of a nicely reddened bum!!!

Just been having a look at Nigella Lawson and even though my predilection is for blondes I think I could make an exception in her case. What a woman – and she can cook as well! She can cook my bacon and eggs any day of the week . . . or night of the week for that matter.

I rather think she has more than a passing resemblance to Sarah (Furby). Furby, if you are reading this, it’s meant in the best possible taste. As you know I am a gentleman.

Hey fellas hear this Johns saying he’s the only one that has seen Connie in the nude “I appear to be the only one to have seen her without her AOL clothes on!” its becoming more salacious by the day, I’m off to take a extremely cold shower.

Know how much cold water has been over me tonight, more than Niagara Falls ooohhh wee and know I see this link – I was reticent about finding the link myself and for that reason. Oldboy and Druid, Hate to tell you this, but Connie has decided that I am a more important entry in her diary than previous engagements. Even as I write, she is winging her way to me and I am ready to welcome her into my arms. The champagne is on ice, red roses tied up in a silk ribbon ready to give to her and a wonderful treat is sizzling away on my hotplate. Not only that, but I am here! Tall, dark, handsome and eager - and not without experience!!!

I will cook her chips like no one has ever done before.

Have to agree with Dave - Druid it is all in your mind.

And Dave - think it's time you got back to the Archers . . . let someone of undoubted good looks, charm and charisma take over . . . ME. Be fair on Connie both of you, you can't blame her for dumping you two for The Cid!!!

I have no need to read about adventures with wonderful women – I live these adventures every day of my life.

Haven't been in here for a while, and I must say I am shocked, appalled, yay Horrified at the way this topic has degenerated into grown-men fantising about Connie. I forced myself to read all seven pages and felt quite ill by the end.

I would protest more, but I have Daniel Day Lewis upstairs, resting on the bed, he still has that long hair from when he was in 'The Last of the Mohicans' and the weight of the hair has given the poor darling a head-ache. So, I must apply some gentle adminstrations in the expert way only a mature wordly-wise woman can! :evil

Hello Mrs M, I do so apologise for the behaviour of this lot! You know that it is quite unlike me to indulge in crass banality? However per chance to dream, to fantasise! However we both have full grasp on reality, and I now think with your return Connie has been eclipsed. She is too young and inexperienced to compete with a mature woman such as you and of course Sarah. Well boys will be boys as the saying goes; of course there are still some real men around here.

Ah but it was 70 Hilly miles Dave, have you tried cycling in the Cotswolds, a hill around every corner!

Were you in the CTC?

John.

oldboy2000
21st May 2001, 07:21
Know exactly what you mean by a hill around every corner ! No I never belonged to the CTC but was a member of the YHA which I used a lot, especially when I rode to Scotland and back from London.
I belonged to a club called Zeus R.C. a racing club. All our racing in those days was on Old disused Aerodromes, with Time Trials in the very early mornings on the roads, had to get up too early for those !
Two serious crashes whilst training finished me off as far as cycling went, and never rode again after the last one.
Must admit the roads had far less Motors on them in my day, don't think I would like to ride these days with all these Road Rage Motorists about.

Dave...

druid
21st May 2001, 09:48
Yes Dave, we do encounter Road Rage quite often, we do not get 'bullied' so much in a large group as much as we do when there are only a few, things we have to endure are, drivers deliberately driving alongside as close as possible to us, drinks cans thrown from car windows and people shouting abuse as they go by (mostly young men and women with several in a car), last week two of our members were knocked off there cycles by an irate taxi driver (he cut in deliberately for no reason other than he dislikes cyclists).
It is strange that we are told cycling is environment friendly and healthy, yet deep down a large amount of motorists still hate cyclists.
If a motorist behaves badly in his car, then he is called a maniac or lout, any cyclist behaving badly is a damned cyclist!

Hello John, Dave, I'm sure smallethic meant no offence did you smallethic, I See there has been a shift in topic to physical activity and exercise. Years ago I used to be a power lifter amongst other athletic pursuits but cycling was not one of them, the stamina and energy required for cycling is taxing indeed and that is not taking into account the prolific rate of dehydration. I have a friend who years ago used to cycle quite a lot but these days he is too old or at least that is what he tells me, I think that he has simply lost interest. Because no matter how old you are you are always capable of at least a modicum of physical activity.
It is pertinent these days to note that children are not very fit there is simply too many indolent distractions, such as what I am sitting in front of now-but later I will be taking my wife out and the dogs for a long walk.

I am so sorry if I have rambled on a bit, unfortunately it is a habit of mine; my missus is always telling me to 'shut it'.
I don't think it is out of order to comment on things other than the subject heading in the forums, after all we are talking to each other and when you talk face to face the subject tends to deviate just the same as it does here, by bringing my cycling into the thread I was just trying to be friendly, I think it is nice to know the hobbies and activities of people here (no not that sort of activity Oldboy!)
See now I have rambled on again! That Smallethic has a lot to answer for Lol.

John "just a ramblin on"

elcid123
21st May 2001, 20:00
Hello John, usually you beat me to the post - I could not agree with you more with regard to changing topics and subjects. Let us all feel free to ramble on as much as we please and on whatever subject we please. As you say Druid, it is life itself! How rigid, constrained and stuffy a web site would be if we were to remain steadfastly on a topic. I come here to talk and yes, conversation does tend to switch from one thing to another. How very boring it would be if it didn’t. I love to hear about other people, what interests them, what hobbies they have and what makes them ‘tick’.

But Lo!! I may be wrong . . . perhaps we should all say the same thing and satisfy those who would like to be ‘Big Brother’ symbols.

That’s another thing I like, (changing topic yet again) - ‘1984’, the novel, and then a good film, was a prophetic insight into human nature and Psyche, and what about the film Nosferato.

Daniel you have not offended anyone or upset anyone in this forum, we are a happy gang of folks here talking about anything we want to and rambling on-we do of course address matters which concern AOL and Endeavour to help if we can. There is one that considers talking about I S P’s to be an intellectual pursuit on Site complaints and suggestions? And idle banter and gossip to be nonsense and infantile, I am of a different opinion.
It is interesting the more we learn about one another, Our interests, hobbies and nagging wives Lol-the more we enrich our own being and become less insular, a more rounded and balanced human being.

As founder member and President of the Rambling Association, I would like to say that you all make me proud. I thought I was Rambler in Chief, but you all put me to shame!

By the way Pam, you seem to be getting rather too friendly with Oldboy - watch that man!! He has tricks up his sleeve that you would never dream of. He has led Connie a merry dance and I know that she has become emotionally unbalanced since she met up with Oldboy - Be careful Pam, that's all I'm saying.

Druid, Oldboy mentioned that you had been out on the tiles with Connie? Take no notice. He is only trying to distract people from his own nefarious activities and put the blame on your doorstep.
I'm not one to stir the you know what - but it has been mentioned in Rambling Circles that he has been seen out with you know who on more than one occasion. He rather gave the game away however as he kept telling everyone 'No, I'm not Oldboy, you are mistaken, I am Druid (spelt D R U I D)'. How transparent can you get??? Lol

As Connie often says to me when we are getting amorous - 'Ive tried the rest, now I'll have the best' . . . She told me that she always saves the best till last and has confirmed to me both verbally and in writing that she will look no further!!

Eat your hearts out poor mortals.

Adrian, Cheshire is not Scouse land it is outside the boundaries of Merseyside. Anyway what are you having for your tea? Watch out for when she makes an excuse and leaves you'll then know that she is coming down here to sunny Cheshire.
What's this Dave? Southern hospitality is the best, I know a lot of people down past Watford and yes I've got to agree-but I think we northerners just have the edge the secret is the water we drink here and all the sunshine we get, it's like the Mediterranean in climate.

I suppose 'you lot' have been wondering why I have been absent these last few days, well the truth is it is all due to Connie, she asked me if I would pop down to her place to fix her washing machine and being the gentleman I am I could hardly refuse now could I, unfortunately when I got there she had other plans for me! When I protested that I had to get back to the missus I was restrained, (I won't describe how, as I don't want to excite Oldboy too much, it is bad for his 'ticker') suffice to say I struggled to escape but to no avail and I have been held in her residence against my will for the last couple of days.

No thanks John, I don't want to see your hairy legs but the sight of Connie riding a bike is a sight to behold I can tell you, with the sweat shimmering on her legs and arms and her pert curvaceous breasts heaving with the undulating motion of the bike. And her hair gently caressed by the wind..... I bet you wished you had a tandem?
Anyway I hope the weather is fine for you, think I will have a ride myself. Whatever gave you the impression and preconception that I was overweight? I am all muscle, exercising with Connie amongst other things keeps me in perfect shape.
Where have the Ladies' gone? Mrs M, Sarah, Pam, to name but three! I am the quintessential English gentleman: indeed the epitome of manners and proprietary; I am sure that they must be aware of this

druid
27th May 2001, 21:54
As it happens we do have a tandem! And Cid it was not me who implied that you were 'a little on the large side' it was that 'cad' Oldboy!
Typical, after a week of nice sunny weather it had to rain this morning for our ride, although later on it became very 'muggy' we managed 65 miles today most of it uphill!

John.

elcid123
28th May 2001, 03:31
I had a very good idea that it was oldboy alias Harry Lime, who implied that I was corpulent, I just knew it was going to rain this morning but it did abate this afternoon and in its wake humidity. 65 miles and uphill that's a fair bit of exercise and with relative humidity of 75 per cent you would require six to eight pints of liquid to replenish this loss.
A tandem is a very rare piece of apparatus these days, what you need is Connie sitting on the front saddle then you will truly have a sight to behold, a veritable nymph indeed.
