is it an absolute must to have a HD cooler on a 7200 HD? all mine seems to do is plaster the PCB on the drive in dust! this will insulate it and just make it hotter!

Will it knacker up without the cooler?

A good rule of thumb for any bit of electronics is if it's too hot to press and hold your thumb against then its too hot. Hasn't let me down yet :)

My 10000rpm U160 SCSI drives are happy without any kind of fan but that is not necessarily significant.

i think its the speed of the drive thats ment to cause excess heat though mark! so yours running 2500RPM faster are OK? i will ponder the situation :)

It is recommended you use a fan with the 7,200 hd dv - you can get the hard drive fans that are dust-proof or something, that don't creat the dust as much.

If you want to take it off - keep a check on it - I suppose it depends how long you are on your computer for any given time averagely - if you are one an average of around 6 hours per day, then I would say you can get away with it - any more than that and I would be inclined to put one on - of course it is upo to you :)

Right, lets sort this one out :) :)

You dont need a fan on a HD at all, on 7200+ rpm drives, a fan "might" get an extra 1-2 years out of it, but by the time it breaks without a fan, there will be 300+ gig drives out anyway :)

If you are an overclocker and want to keep your case cool, then a HD cooler is mandatory, as you dont want a hot block of metal sitting in there :)

Oh, and the "rule of the thumb" is a VERY good test :) As you can only stand 60 degrees for a short amount of time. Unless you have asbestos fingers of course :)

When I put my new 7200 HD in ,probably tomorrow. I'll shove it between the floppy and the othe HD. Hopefully that will create a large heatsink.I actually got a retail box ,so it's got instructions ..and I've read them too.. It' don't mention a HD fan at all .

I'll baffle a bit of air flow from the case fan over the 3 1/2 bay.

Nig:)
