This function is available in IE and I've heard that updating IE sometimes screws up the icons in the Favorites folder.

The file itself is called favicon.ico and is found (if present) in the main directory of the web site. So, for instance, the icon for Yahoo should be located at http://www.yahoo.com/favicon.ico

If you like them that much, you can save all the icons into a separate folder on your PC, eg as yahoo-favicon.ico, net4nowt-favicon.ico etc. Then open up the Favorites folder - usually, C:\WINDOWS\Favorites and locate the Favorite you want to associate the icon with. Right-click on it and select "Properties". Then click on the "Change icon" button and browse to where you saved the favicon.ico file. Click OK and then Apply.

Since the file is now local to your PC, further "upgrades" of IE shouldn't mess things up in the future.

This is what I do.

Enter the url for net4nowt.com in the IE addresss window, press go, and add it to Favourites. Just leave IE as it is, and go to Start at the bottom left of the screen, and click on Find, then Files or Folders, enter *.ico then click on Find Now. Scroll down the list and see the icon for net4nowt, right-click and copy. Paste it wherever you like - I made a new folder called Icons.

Go back to the Favourites list in IE and right-click on the net4nowt entry, then click on Properties/Change Icon/Browse, open the Icons folder (use the briefcase at the top with the Up arrow to find your way to it), click on the net4nowt icon, click on Open, then in the Change Icon window click OK/Apply/OK. And that's it.

edit: as Rainbow Warrior says, the icon will normally be called favicon.ico (although not in the case of net4nowt), so what I do is rename it when I save it my Icons folder, so I have yahoo.ico, google.ico or whatever. Otherwise, if you already have a favicon.ico saved and you later try to save another with the same name, you'll just get a message asking you if you want to replace it with the new one.

Maggie46 - if you lurv yer icons so much, maybe you might just like this fun little utility.

If you download this iconsucker (http://www.copseystrain.com/iconsucker/frame_download.html) you will find all the icons you could wish for and extract them straight off your applications, games etc.

You just wouldn't believe how many icons your own HDD could yield.

Have fun! :)

Utility to help keep and organise those icons.

"The biggest problem with favicons is that they are not persistent. If you empty your Temporary Internet Files folder, the icons are lost. The only way to restore a favicon is to delete the link from the Favorites folder and recreate it."
