I got a new HD today along with a UDMA66 ribbon cable
i] The master socket is at the end not in the middle .Which will make it dead awkward to reach the slave CD.
ii]As it's got the same number of pins conected to the mobo why does it work better than a standard ribbon cable that also has 40 pins connected.
iii] Is a UDMA ribbon cable the same as a UDMA100 ribbon cable?

Hey Nig

i] You could make the CD master, no? Or is that a silly suggestion ;)
ii] The cable has twice the number of thingies in the middle - ya know, grey wire things - hence making data transfer twice as fast
iii] I think UDMA100 cable is the same as UDMA66.

Any help?
Synergy :)

As far as I know Nic, there is no difference between the connecting ribbon for a 66 and 100 however I am not 100 per cent sure on this?!

Thanks but

i] IDE1 = HD master+CD slave/IDE2 = CDRW master+HD2 slave
That way I can copy on the fly

ii]It may have twice the number of strands , but they all end up in a bottleneck of 40 pins at the mobo end .

i] Oh I see... all I can suggest is a longer cable, then :(
ii] Good point, not sure how that works :)

:lol Sorry bout that

A UDMA cable for 66 or 100 is the same. Compared to a regular IDE cable there are twice as many strands, IDE having 40 and UDMA/66/100 having 80. Every other strand is tied to earth. This reduces the crosstalk (interference) between adjacent strands which would otherwise rise as the frequency increases, making it possible to operate the interface at a higher speed.

Nig, if it can't reach you can change your configuration and put CD-RW as primary slave. This one is in a lower slot (? right) so the ribbon might be long enough to reach the mobo. If you have another empty slot (my full size case has three large slots) you can put CD-ROM below the CD-RW and get even nearer to the mobo.

EDIT: If you want to keep your original configuration but the ribbon will reach only lower CD (check first!) you can always pull CDs out and swap them round.

Thanks all
I didn't know about the extra earthing on the udma cables.
I'll have a go at shoving it in later this week .
I would of put it in today ,but last night a UD agent started with a score of at least 42 thousand [it's off the scale ] so I want to let that finish just to see what happens !
