To add to the "Just how hot is too hot"...
Can I remove my existing HSF to replace it with a new one? Or could that potentially damage the die? I have a Super Orb/thermal grease for my athlon along with a case fan to cool it down further however I need to take off what I have first - but can I do this without causing damage, or can I do this at all?
Thanks.
Synergy :)

i personally couldnt reccomend fitting the orb. removing the old hsf shouldnt do any damage if done gently. buy a thermoengine. at current they are the best i have seen. last time i saw an orb a customer had broke his die when twisting the orb on :( all i can say is be bloody careful with it.

If your coolermaster was on the right way round and its still hot, something is wrong!

BTW some exotic thermal pastes eat the alloy heatsink and should only be used with copper ones!

Yes you can remove it as many times as you like! just dont put the screw driver through the mobo!

I can't believe this processor! It's getting really hot with this new super orb - 70 degrees and I switched it off. I think it's going straight back to CCL...would you agree.

yep way too hot that.

I have my 1.3 Axia core at 1.5 and it rarley goes above 45 C

Techtips:-
Please reveal your secret :lol What are you using to cool that? I have both sides off, a super orb + thermal grease + a large household fan blowing air inside. It's getting to about 62 idle and 70 + emergency bleeping with full load - and I'm underclocking this 1.3 to 1GHz!
Any help would be appreciated.
TIA ~ Synergy.

Having the sides off prob wont help as it gives no air flow!

Do you not have any other fans in the case? as i have said before, i have 5 in mine to keep the CPU at a steady 41C

Well it helped Ian's case :)
We've tried a couple of fans in the case but to no avail :(

It might have helped ian, but arent ian and you tried it and it didnt work :) I think it was Nig that told me it is actualy better to keep the sides on rather than off.

it might not help as your problem sounds more than just air flow, but i have only 1 fan blowing air into the case and 3 sucking it out, one at the bottom, 1 in the middle and one at the top! IMHO this seems to get a good airflow over the entire case area!

Are you 100% that the HSF is making a contact with the core?

I meant my friend and I :p
I can see why you've got good airflow :)
I'm absolutely 100% sure, there's no way it could get any closer anyway
My dad's nearly insisting I send it back. That, or play Half-Life online with UD agent running on high priority and blow the b@$+@rd - then send it back and say the recommended HSF did not cool it enough. (Mind you I don't think it is anyway but that would make sure it wasn't. ;))
Thanks for your help, John/Ian/Richy, I await a mail from AMD/CCL with interest. :)

If you are 100% sure mate dont wait! just send it back with a full explanation and request another chip!

Out of interest what program are you using to report these high temps? if its the BIOS reporting it have you tried the latest VIA hardware monitor (if its a VIA chipset) or the latest sandra?

The BIOS can report it wrong if the sensor it actualy touching the CPU because it make a hotspot, and if its sandra or VIA if they arent the latest versions they report too high! Sandra had my Duron running over 90C  when it was actually 41C

Back it goes then :) D'ya think CCL will accept it back, they're a nice lot since I've mailed them before. I went on your recommendation :lol plus they seem to be fairly cheap :evil
But just before I do...
It's an Asus motherboard and the BIOS and the program in Windows gives the temperatures. And I'll check for a hardware monitor download on their site, thanks for the good idea.

Make sure you have enough thermal paste on. To monitor my temps i use Motherboard monitor. http://mbm.livewiredev.com/
