Where exactly does it go? As the label protecting the pins says to use paste.
The processor has four pads on it.

Just place a THIN lair of it on the CPU core mate (bit in middle :lol) the pads are to stop the HSF from crushing the core!

Got ya!:) Cheers John
BTW went to CCL today- got to use their toilet too!

YOu need Platinum /.Silver Compound for get the Silicone type Silicon IMHO insulates the heat not dissipates it.

I have a tube of arctic silver II and it made no difference to mine.
Mine is a PIII though. It's still hitting 66-70 C. I'm getting fed up with it now as my high temperature alarm keeps going off. My heatsink is red hot to touch.
Should the fan be blowing air onto the heatsink or sucking away from it?
sos for highjacking the thread but it seemed a similar enough topic.:)

Platinum/Silver Compound? rumours are it eats alloy heatsinks! and is only good for copper ones!!!! Silicone is as good as owt! its been used on transistors of donkeys years!
Even Pudds will confirm this! as i said its only a rumour!
Like Pudds said, you wont notice a difference probably when it comes to heat dissipaiton!

66-70? How much are you overclocking it pudds? Not even my 1.3 gets that hot! :D

80MHz on a 500MHz PIII
EDIT:
Pudds your fan should BLOW on to the fins on the heatsink, this will enable it to dissipate heat faster as it cools them and they can then absorb more heat :)
Is the fan knakked ?

Pudds summat wrong there mm8ty
I have my 1.3 Axia core at 1.5 and it rarley goes above 45 C
My alarm is at 50 and only had it up there once. Mind you in true techy style I never have the case covers on in and out testing to fart around with case covers.

Your CPU aint nearly 2 years old mate!
Dont forget Pudds's will run a lot hotter due to thicker tracks on the die etc. and he has it nearly at its limit!
Your Axia is just ticking over!

I've always thought the fan should be blowing onto the heatsink. The reason i've never had it that way is that all the pictures of my heatsink show the coolermaster logo showing. Anyway i've swapped it round and it does seem to be slightly cooler (although not much).
Idle temp is 29C.
Ripping a cd into mp3 got it up to 70C last night , now the max it's got to is 66 (although it was warmer last night).
I think john's hit the nail on the head as regards the architecture of the processor. Mines an old katmai 0.25 micron PIII which will produce more heat simply because it needs more voltage to pump the data around. I'm not sure what voltage athlon's operate at but my PIII is running on 2.05 Volts.
The katmai's only went up to 600mhz anyway so i'm close to the limit. The one lucky thing is that all PIII's have a thermal cut off so i will never fry my Processor, it will just switch it's self off when it hit's a certain temp.
My case is very cramped which i think also contributes, my PSU is right over my CPU which i bet blocks a lot of airflow. I have 2 case fans which i bought not long ago but haven't got round to fitting yet.
Maybe a new case is needed.
Anyone know where i can get a cheap full tower case without PSU?

Athlons are 1.6V or 1.7V i think and 0.18 micron tracks pudds.
Dunno about a case you without a PSU sorry! mind you could always try .........

Well reversing the fan seemed to make it worse so i've had to switch it back. What i have done thoughis re-applied the thermal paste. I always try to use an extremely thin layer but i think i've been doing it too thin! This time i made it loads thicker and now ripping and encoding the same cd caused a maximum temperature of only 58C. Before i redid the paste it was doing 66-70!
P.S. Your parent company ;) don't sell cases without psu's.
Cheapest i've found elsewhere is £46 and that includes a PSU.

Dabs B list stock has a whole bunch of cases from £18.
download the list from the products page.

I know they dont pudds :lol but i though a tower with a 300W PSU might be right up your street as you once said "when 1gig athlons come down to 100 quid i am having one"
I though it may be usefull for future purchases :)

I'm tempted, i even put my CPU and motherboard up for sale on the auctions last week but changed my mind and took it off after a few days. If i did though i'd still wan't a case without PSU as my current one is allready 300W:)
I'm going cold turkey and trying not to upgrade. Let's hope the withdrawal symptoms aren't too bad! :lol
