Anyone else getting the
Error 5: Determining Device Capabilities
error message when the agent fires up?

I'm using agen 1.0f.

The support page knows of it and comments that it can raise network scores. Well my fancy new v.92 gives a network score of 6

My last work unit earned me 3 points:lol :lol
Fortunately points no longer mean prizes;)

Yeah I got that and the usual 40,000 points for the network score. I haven't tried it recently given my computer's state but I don't think it'll last. :(

You can induce Error 5 by blocking port 80 during upload/download of work units. It's a bit hit and miss if it gives you more points. On one WU I got almost 1000 points /CPU day and the very next one on the same machine earned only 18 points (less than 120 points/CPU day).

The error seems to pop up on it's own randomly but you can make it happen every time by blocking port 80. It doesn't seem to have any adverse effect on the working of UD agent or the PC.

My error 5 is not random - it happens every time I reboot.

Doesn't give me more points either - it reduces them dramatically:(

I meant random with work units. If you have it with one WU error it will come on every time UD is launched, or you click on overall or network score, but you might not get it with the next one. Looks like local Internet conditions have something to do with this and also faster connections seem to be more vulnerable. You tweaked your modem to well :lol .

What firewall are using, Scots, and how is it set up regarding UD? I have Tiny and can get WU with Error 5 only on purpose.

And reading your post I get the impression that you get Error 5 with a network score of 6? Everybody reports 40,000+.

I've had it with every WU for the last couple of weeks. Every reboot, no matter which WU I'm running.

And yes my network score is pathetic compared to the others.

I'm using Zonealarm, but it doesn't work on port numbers, just application names.

I haven't even tweaked the modem yet!! In fact i'm running on 46666 connection now, I used to get 48000 all the time with the previous modem.

But a points score of 3 for a WU !!! Must be the lowest ever recorded!!

This is UDs "official" thread about error 5 (http://forum.ud.com/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=6&t=002473). See if you can find anything useful there. Knowing them it will be new version of software that fixes it.

Thanks TNT

I had already read the first page and a bit of that thread!!

Everyone else was getting higher scores and their problem seemed to be random as you say.

I think I might try to uninstall and reinstall, but I seem to use up another ID every time I do that.

Never done it my self but I'm sure I have read that the "cs.ud" file within the United Devices folder contains your user data. So backing up and replacing this file should keep your user details.

If it is not "cs.ud", a look on the UD message board should reveal which file/s are required.

When you reload it you can select that you already have an account .
It will just create another device.
