This is a sham of a sham of a sham if it exists.
A BOLTON teenager has been sentenced to three life sentences for the brutal rape of a 17-year-old girl who was walking her dog in Moses Gate Country Park in a park.
Now read the full story here http://www.thisisbolton.co.uk/lancashire/bolton/news/BENTOPNEWS0.html
I would dearly love this judge to sentence me "if" i ever did something that warranted me being put in jail
EDIT: just incase this story disappears from the url posted, and for those that might not get a chance to see it, here it is.
A BOLTON teenager has been sentenced to three life sentences for the brutal rape of a 17-year-old girl who was walking her dog in Moses Gate Country Park in a park.
Aytekin Yildirim, aged 19, of Embsay Close in Astley Bridge earlier pleaded guilty to two charges of rape, one count of robbery and one count of possession of a bladed instrument.
He received a life sentence for each rape, a life sentence for robbery and two years for possession of a bladed instrument.
The sentences are the maximum that the judge at Manchester Crown Court could have imposed for each offence and when sentencing him the judge recommended that he should serve a minimum of 16 years before being considered for parole.

So what's the problem with that??

I'd like him to sentence you as well. Three life sentences seems entirely reasonable to me

Just guessing, but perhaps when Bernard refers to it being a sham etc., it is because of the bit lower down in the story that says
"the judge recommended that he should serve a minimum of 16 years before being considered for parole."
So - as usual, "life" doesn't necessarily mean "locked up for life" and in just over 5 years per "life" sentence, the guy could be out on parole.

SO if it was your Daughter he raped, and he had the same punishment dished out, it would be ok for him to apply for parole in 16 years time would it

The judge gave the maximum sentence available, so I don't see how you can criticise him. And that's perhaps one of the longest sentences for rape I've ever seen (many killers get less).

Parole should not even come in to the equation in this instance.
Would you still say its ok for him to ask for parole in 16 years time, especially if it was your Daughter? I doubt it very much
It appears from how i read your reply, you feel it seems a good sentence, and its ok for him to apply for parole - and yes no one says he will get parole either

If I were a relative I'd want him to get the maximum possible sentence. And he has, so why you're trying to pretend this is a "sham" or the judge has somehow been lenient escapes me entirely. Are you going to start posting complaints about the 99% of other rape convictions that get lesser penalties?
As for parole, I don't recall any case ever where one rape has lead to a judge recommending the perpatrator never being released. Recommending a 16 year minimum term is a very severe step (and doubtless well deserved).

Oh, and judges can only impose life sentences anyway. They can make recommendations about minimum terms, but they don't have to be followed.

I say its a sham becasue parole has been brought in to the equation, and as i said he probably won't get it (hopefully)
"Am i going to start posting complaints about the 99% of other rape convictions that get lesser penalties?"
No, why? well i don't listen to the news, i don't watch the news, and this particualar item caught my attention whilst browsing the net, so i thought i would post it on here, as most others on here post "certain" news items. That is not to say i couldn't care less about other rapes, its just that i don't here of much news about other rapes for my reasons given.
Most of the news i see or here if you like, is on here n4n

So you evidently think this sentence is sufficient for the crimes commited, well i certainly don't......Life to me means life, but it's evident this is not what it means in terms of punishment set out by the legal system.

i think he can apply after half his sentence is done, so does it mean he can apply for parole in 8 yrs?

I think that for normal sentences you become eligible for a parole review after half the term but for a life sentence you serve a minimum of the tarrif imposed by the Home Secretary which is generally based on the recommendation of the trial judge.
There was some talk of moving the setting of the tarrif from the Home Secretary to a judicial person but I don't know if that's happened yet.

Serial rapists should face the death penalty. It must be very comforting to know that all the tax this poor girls parents pay is being used to keep this sort of lowlife alive.
