I seem to have collected a trojan horse from the Win XP update site!
It was identified as Downloader Small.AR. Anyone come across this? McAfee viruscan online failed to spot this but AVG did.

Hi Maggie,
There are different types of nasties out there including: viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, adware, diallers, browser Hijackers,(scumware) etc. To best protect your pc from these different types of nastie you need to have "layered protection". (ie. anti-virus, firewall, anti-trojan, and spyware and dialer removers).
I would definately recommend a dedicated Anti-Trojan program.

See the "TrojanHunter vs TDS-3" thread.

Cheers,

Trev.

Snuffs,
Kasperski is rated very highly. I fancy it and was asking for opinions on it recently.
It`s a shame it has different versions for 9x and XP though. ( I use both, and don`t want to buy two licences ) :(

Cheers,

Trev.

I had constant trouble with McAfee viruscan online, including finding that they had automtically debited a renewal subscription to my credit card at the end of the first year. It also produced a number of conflicts with other applications.
So far, I have found the free version of AVG very good. In fact, if you use this in conjunction with Zonealarm (firewall)and the free version of Adaware (spyware detector) you should have reasonably good security, without needing to spens any money.
