I have twice received a warning from AVG background scanner saying that a Trojan Downloader. Small.AR has been identified and telling me to run AVG to remove this. On both occasions the AVG scan reported no viruses found. However, when I opened the detailed results log I foundthat most of my files were shown as 'could not open-not checked'.
Since I am currently using the free version of AVG this does not have their helpline support.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Because when you cancelled the trojan downloader it will have removed its self. You could try changing the way it scans to test all extensions in the complete test settings option

I had same problem with dropper trojan, if you type trojan remover into google you can download a trojan removal program which gennerally work better on trojans than most av's

I have just dumped avg after 3 years of using it and thinking it was protecting me.
At work we had AVG installed but when we got broadband on monday it came with a firewall and a virus proggy called Asap from mcafee and despite avg being updated every day "asap" found 1 virus and a couple of trojans. Due to this i "acquired" another proggy from mcafee virusscan professional edition and that too found stuff i had 1 virus and 3 trojans.

Interesting! When I still had Mcfee installed I tried their 'Free security Test' from another site and it told me that I was vulnerable in each category!, even though I was supposed to be protected by Mcafee.
When I reinstalled the premuim Mcafee viruscan online on my new laptop, it tried to block my (first time installation) XP windows update down load, saying that there were 'unsafe scripts' in this. The same thing happened with several other application updates.
In the end I found so many warning windows that I uninstalled Mcafee and installed AVG. This has thrown up two warnings, about the Small.AR. trojan, but appears to be working, even though the removal of the download Small.AR virus does not appear on any logs or scans.

Swings and roundabouts. Different proggys pick up different code.

If it`s a FREE AV you`re after, I recommend and continue to use the excellent Avast Home Anti Virus.:
http://www.avast.com/i_idt_226.html
Check out Virus Bulletin for Anti Virus tests.
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?table
I think the better pay for Anti Virus programs ATM are Kaspersky and NOD32.
Also check out the security forums at :

Another excellent anti-virus is Panda-Anti-Virus from www.pandasoftware.co.uk. They do two different versions, the homeuser version, which is cheaper and simpler, but just as good as the business version, the latter includes a firewall, and is of course more expensive. I use the latter and my neighbour has the cheaper version, they both update automatically at least once a day, and you can subscribe to their newsletters as well, which lets you know about the latest viruses and trojans, and what problems they may cause etc. You can download a trial version, which can be updated once, and have 30 days to try it out before paying for it.:) ;)
