I'm looking for a cheap digital camera for a Christmas Present.
The problem is, their computer does not have a USB port :( and all the cameras I have seen have USB connections.
Is there a way to get round this problem?

buy a usb card - cost 15 or so quid, they will need a spare pci slot for it though.

As long as it isn't an early Win 95 one as I don't think that early versions of win 95 support USB. :)

If it cannot be fitted with USB, the only other answer is a secondhand one (eg. EBAY), or one that takes cards and a parallel port card reader. A collection of older models did serial or both
To support USB where not already available, you need:
1. Win98SE or better (Win98 USB support might not be good enough)
2. A spare PCI slot.
It's also possible that the motherboard may have a USB header that just needs a plate cable.

Brilliant!! Thank you, thank you. Thanks to all of you.
I knew if I asked here someone would have the answer :) :)
John, I've ordered one of those thingies you recommended :smokin
MTDay, I'm afraid I dont know what "one that takes cards and a parallel port card reader" means
I know the computer is running Windows 98 but not sure if it is the 98se version.

Just dont forget the drivers mate, it gets a bit of a bad review but it is from people not getting it to work at USB2 on XP and it needs SP1 in and they dont seem to be able to grasp this.
Mine came with a driver CD (Win98, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP), if for some reason yours doesnt come with a driver CD let me know and you can have mine.

You could just buy a ps2/usb adaptor or alternatively, a serial/usb adapter (although not seen serial ones) - cost all of about two quid :)

You can't use a PS/2-USB (Mouse) adapter with anything else!
You can get card readers (for SmartMedia and other formats - usually only single format though) that work from the parallel port - then you take the card out of the camera, and read it in there.
Actually, most cameras other than the real cheapies DO take cards, but to go the parallel port reader approach, it would have to be a type of card you can GET a reader for.
Anyway, good luck with the USB card
