Does anyone here use the CX6230, 2mp ? And do you have any comments on it's resolution for 7"x5" prints and up to 10"x8" ?

The current issue of Computer Active lists it as Best Buy at £150.

Superior performance to Cannon A300, 3.2 @ £199 / Epson L300, 3.2 @ £249 / Fuji A303, 3.2 @ £230 / Konica KD-310Z, 3.2 @ £250 / Olympus C-220, 2mp @ £170.

" the CX6230 has 16Mb of built in memory as well as SD card slot,
what's more the 2MP Kodak produced more lifelike colours and better overall image clarity than any of the other tested cameras - and at £150 was far cheaper than the other cameras reviewed "

Current instore offer from PCW is £128.89, £10 less if ordered online.

This is my first dabble into digital - consider myself fairly experienced in all aspects of photography, from Minox to quarter plate, Pentax to EOS Elan/100, etc.

Most of which I am considering selling on ebay - plus a lifetime collection of possessions - which is another reason for digital dabbling.

Any comments on the Kodak 6230 would be welcome.

It depend on what you regard as acceptable. 2MP is not really good enough for 10x8. If you have been using very high quality optical cameras then you may be disapointed with a 2Mp camera. $mp cameras are a reasonable price nowaday. Kodak camera also tend to be a bit basic. You may want to consider how much control you have over the camera shutter speed, depth of field etc.

The best bet would be to find somewhere to let you try a couple of photos with one and print them out. Whether anywhere does that nowadays I don't know.

BTW 2MP is fine for 10x8 unless have the eye of a hawk and/or are very picky. My battered old 2MP Canon A20 has always managed it.

I know you wanted info on the Kodak and my first answer was has helpfull as a hole in the head but dont discount the A60, its a little cracker for the money. http://www.powershot.com/powershot2/a70-60

As the canon has superfine compression this means you can just get away with 10x8 prints :)

I could easilly see the difference between a 2Mp at 10x8 and a 4Mp and even that I could tell the difference easily between that an an optical camera print. I would guess RdeN would have no difficulty neither if he has been using quarter plate cameras I would assume he has been using them on a professional basis. Quarter plate cameras don't come cheap. It really depends what sort of quality he wants

I think that’s called stating the bleeding obvious :rofl

Of course you can tell the difference but you are comparing them when they are next to each other, a 2MP print at 10x8 does lack some detail BUT you can not discount it out right as it isn’t good enough when it patently is. I did my nephews wedding using my 2MP camera and they preferred my photos to the real photographers, including the 10x8s. I don’t give a monkeys if you believe it or not cos I am happy in the knowledge he and his wife were very happy with the results.

You also seem to have had selective blindness when i said "you can just get away with 10x8 prints" :)

Thanks John and Pink Panther for your informed comments - currently
I confess to being influenced by John's references to the A60/70/80.

I have been following several paths, ranging from ebay auctions to
PCW and Jessops.

Found handling most of the digital cameras rather disconcerting due to the small size and 'plasticy' body feel - probably I will still retain my old faithful Pentax Spotmatic and the Cannon EOS100 (Elan) both produce technically superior photographs - and settle for an
A40 or 60 for digital experience.

A point of interest, was in Jessops yesterday, commented that their prices were considerably higher in some cases to PCW, etc.
Their brochure stated 'price match promise' against local stores within 20 mile radius - a few minutes further discussion elicited

"OK, we will match any dealer price advertised, even on the web, just bring in a print copy of web advert"

UnQuote.

Spot on, P-P,

In the '50's was with Sargrove Electronics (John Sargrove, Pioneer of
of printed circuitry, designer of the first 'printed circuit board'and
creator of the first fully automated radio set production line.

The board was double-sided 1/2" Paxolin and had the conductor paths engraved into surface, sprayed with silver, milled off surface,
the resistor patterns were engraved and sprayed with colloidial
graphite then surface milled off - small capacitors were engraved areas with built-up alternate layers of silver and mica - the valves (designed by John) were mounted at the corners of the twin panels and acted as support spacers....

The whole project was backed by the UK Govt. to bring wireless sets to the Indian nation [Part of our Great British Empire!]

To cut a very long story short, for publicity and exhibitions, I photographed every thing we designed and built - much of it for the 'Festival of Britain' South Bank Site - always using quarter plate and/or semi-professional 16mm cine.

Going back to print sizes Kodak reckon you can print out 10x8s using 1.6MP, even i would say that was pushing it :lol http://www.kodak.com/US/en/digital/dlc/book3/chapter5/lesson1/p07.shtml

If you are happy with 2MP mate the A60 is brilliant, it offers from full auto to very creative and on to full manual. The A80 is wicked but it it is up to you if think it is worth the extra £125.

Here are a couple of shots taken on my A80, which at the end of the day is just a pumped up version of the A60.

My niece http://members.aol.com/itsabelter/shan.jpg
A weed http://members.aol.com/itsabelter/weed2.jpg
A wooden post http://members.aol.com/itsabelter/woodpost.jpg

As for photos on a 2MP camera, all the ones here http://uk.geocities.com/myskiesabove/index.htm were taken on my Canon A20 which pretty ancient next to an A60

John:
Ref my earlier comment on Jessops matching Uk on-line prices - finally settled on a Canon A70.

Early hours of Xmas eve, Amazon reduced A70 price to £209.99 - went into Jessops with printed copy, " No Problem, Sir, and we will throw in a Xmas gift or two !"

Unpacked A70 in the evening, No Canon 16 MB card in box. So no Xmas digital photos of my Grandchildren...

Saturday, back to Jessops -

"extreme apologies, Sir. Would you accept a Jessops 128 MB card and a further voucher for 25 Free digital prints as a token of our apology"

( had to accept, it would have been churlish of me to refuse )

So, John, reckon I had the bargain of the year, £210 for A70 with £30
memory card included.
