Chicken sculpture scoops 'Turnip Prize'

A raw chicken stuffed with leaves has won this year's 'Turnip Prize' for bad art.

The award, an alternative to the controversial Turner Prize (Curently being judged), is presented by the residents of a Somerset village.

Regulars at pubs in Wedmore, near Cheddar, vote on a series of 'rubbish artworks' created by members of the public rather than internationally renowned sculptors and painters.

According to the rules, there are no barriers to entry into the competition, they simply state: "You can enter anything you like, but it must be rubbish."

Winner James Timms receives a specially made trophy - a real turnip impaled on a rusty six-inch nail - for his composition 'Take a Leaf out of my Chook'.

Competing alongside Mr Timms' entry were: 'Bitter and Twisted' - a piece of grapefruit peel; 'Jonny Wilkinson' - a condom and a razor blade' and 'What a Waste' - a sculpture of plumbing pipe.

Organiser Trevor Prideaux said the award ceremony took place in a packed New Inn at Wedmore and it had been "a lot of fun".

It's the Kings New Clothes crap all over again...all of it's a total con...why argue about which group of 'art judges' ...aren't they the same really ?
Aren't they all 'smudged' with the 'trendy' brush....just for luck...or is it money ?
And ...who decided THEY were THE ONES ?

We may as well ask WHO decides WHO is picked for ANY QUANGO ?
Or even ANY GOVERNMENT 'INQUIRY COMMITTEE' ?

I still want to know what REALLY happened to the scientist who was 'found with his wrists slashed' with a BLUNT knife...it all STINKS with ANOTHER WHITEWASH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think they all missed the point. The real Turnip prize should of course have gone to 2Jags Prescott for mangling the English language, and being such an all round duffer.

And while on the subject, why do people sneer at John Prescot for having his own Jaguar? plenty of ordinary people have big cars inc Jags, Mercs BMW etc etc yet they don't get sneered at, He has a ministry car which he is entitled to, would it make things right if he got shot of his own car and should this apply to all people who have the use of more than one car?

Me thinks as usual it's Shaz jumping on the anti labour bandwagon and supporting the Tory press who so like to sneer at Mr Prescot. :)

I never had the benefit of public school education like 2 Jags, 5 houses Prescott, or the ability to stick my nose into the public trough of limitless money they have access to. Not that I'd want to, I hasten to add.
Prescott is subject to sneers precisely because he's had these 'advantages' yet remains a bone-headed pleb nevertheless. Probably more to be pitied, were it not for the undue influence he seems to be able to wield, as a result of being appointed deputy to the kings new clothes.

P.S. It ain't only the Tory press which seems to point his shortcomings out, his own 'side' are also openly derisive of him too.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I couldve sworn this was a thread about a lighthearted alternative Turner PRize entitled the Turnip Prize.

Who turned this into a Partly Political Broadcast for the Tory/Ukip party?

Lighten up mateys :)

Well, I still think it's odd (and hilarious) that Prescott warrants the same 'prize' as an unmade bed.......could be related too :lol

Yes it is supposed to be about the Turnip prize! Being almost local to this event, I watched it on the local news the other night. Brilliant stuff.

I think this is what Geoff mentioned earlier about the Turner prize:
Shedboatshed (Mobile Architecture No 2) 2005 has a similar circularity. Starling dismantled a shed and turned it into a boat; loaded with the remains of the shed, the boat was paddled down the Rhine to a museum in Basel, dismantled and re-made into a shed. Both pilgrimages, provide a kind of buttress against the pressures of modernity, mass production and global capitalism.

One young man with too much time on his hands I would think - I have but one question - why? :lol

Money & fame??? Winning the Turner prize for the most ridiculous and outrageous is quite financially rewarding!!!

I suppose it is Gina, but to be honest if I had to behave as if I'd lost my marbles in order to win a prize, I'd most definitely question whether the prize was worth having! :lol
