View Full Version : Free web hosting but no advertising (?)

I bought our domain name (tuscalum.co.uk) from www.domainsRforever.com and I have just received an email from their support to say that they are in dispute with their upstream ISP and have been disconnected. They say they are not sure of the outcome and advise moving to alternative providers. :(
DomainsRforever's service has been a little bit flaky from time to time but their service was free and there was no advertising - they were there but invisible. So no complaints there.
I'd be grateful if anyone could suggest a similar and good provider.
Thanks

I guess I haven't spelt out my problem clearly. All I need is a provider who will re-direct requests for the tuscalum web page to my site at btinternet. Same for emails.
What I don't understand is how DomainsRforever provided this service for free - the only payment they ever received was a few paltry pence

I used to use freeseudo.com . All they wanted in return was a link from your web page to them. I got round that by having a full stop in the background colour as the link. I guessed that they would just scan the page for the link and not physically go to each page and look.
Perhaps there's something similar around now.

123reg.co.uk seem to do what you want, and you can transfer domains in for free.

Nor sure how you do tranfer ins, but FREEOLA.NET will host a domain for free, without redirection, so long as you use them as your dialup isp.
Domains are pretty cheap there too (via getdotted.com)
I say "not redirection" - I assume it must be a virtual server, but you do appear to be "THERE", not flakily frame-cloaked from somewhere else.
Been looking at them myself with a view to getting a cheap hosted domain, or using one of their subdomains for free - some usefully short ones!

Again - many thanks - all the help is very much appreciated

Are domainsrforever.com letting you transfer your domain out for free?
The reason a company normally charges nothing for the registering of the domain is because they charge you a packet to transfer it.
I've checked and you don't own the domain so domainsrforever.com can sell it to you for whatever price they like :(

The rest of their initial advice also said "Please also be advised that we have informed NOMINET UK and have asked
them to release any Domain for which a transfer request is made.
Nominet UK is available at http://www.nominet.net
All fees have been paid, you do not need to pay Nominet any monies"
so I guess the answer is that I do own the name - I tried to find copies of the original purchase and failed but I do remember that they said a transfer out was free. But the plot thickens. I have just picked up a second email timed at 9:32pm which says
"We are negotiating a transfer of all services to another
provider, so your services should be up and running soon.
In the meantime, if you wish to transfer out - please do following......"
So I suppose I wait to see what happens

If you owned the domain your name would also be under registered by i think (someone correct me if i'm wrong here :o ).

I've been hunting trying to find the original documentation and found some of the original evidence. I did find some DRF FAQ which I downloaded earlier this year which says "Your Domain is registered in your name" and "12. Can I sell my Domain?
That is entirely up to you. Since you are the offical owner of your Domain and not us....."
So, hopefully I'm fireproof (unless, of course, as Esther Ranzen would say) some one out there knows better.
It's interesting innit? I'm glad I am on the fringes of the IT world - I couldn't stand the pace and everything that goes with it - like battling ISPs who don't believe customers are their lifeblood - and that neatly brings me back to my point about what's in it for DRF? Perhaps I'm wrong :lol

I think the Registered by line refers to the nominet tag holder so will very rarely be the same as the registered for.
