not come across this before but i understand linux checks a disc every so many mounts - am using a nas server that uses linux as its core and the mount count is set to 20 - which is a pain as i turn it on and off a few times day and with 4 drives in there it can take a while to boot when the disc check comes in
i understand that 'tune2fs' can alter the mount count but i have no idea how to use it - have very limeted knowledge of linux - do i boot with a cd version and then go to some sort of dos prompt to run 'tune2fs' and alter the mount count

Ubuntu does a check on bootup and checks any mounted disk after 30 mounts. I'm afraid I know nothing about how to change it though I must admit I have found it slightly annoying at times. With the reliability of modern hard drives I think this is overkill - I've never yet had a hard drive fail in umpteen years of using them.
Something to look into I think - thanks for the suggestion :)
A bit later... Just checked and found it's part of the system. HERE is a synopsis of the tune2fs command (http://linux.about.com/library/cmd/blcmdl8_tune2fs.htm) I'll have a play with it later :)

thanks gina - had also found that - it seems simple enough to alter - but i know not how - my experience of Linux is nothing - have booted a cd and looked at the discs on the server system i use - but the interface was windows-ish so have no idea how to run that program

OK Tony, I'll experiment on my test system and post the results here :)

I didn`t know how to change it either. Looks easy enough with ubuntu (no surprize there), just bring up a teminal and type a command.
Don`t know if this is any good to you Tony? I have no clue about nas servers or how to enter commands in one?

thanks - the nas server is just a configured linux - dont know who's core they use but its that plus all the bits you need to run a server with everything else stripped out

an easy linux server without having to learn anything about linux, the mount count is part of the file system - i am told - so its just a matter of booting with a 'normal' linux and resetting the mount count which - is embedded within the disc/s file system - I THINK!!!
