Can't work out why my laptop has started playing up when I put it in 'sleep' mode. It will not wake up, but chugs with a black screen for a while before having to do a restart with the options that include 'safe mode etc.
Any suggestions of a good troubleshooting source for me to look at?
Can't help on Vista I'm afraid. Can only suggest Google.

It looks like it may be a consequence of me installing a new hard drive and re-installing the OS and all my software.

Well I've solved the problem, by updating the BIOS. A scary procedure!!
Oooh errr yes!! Never done that myself. Well done :):)

B$gger, it has started again. Or should I say when I put it to 'Sleep' it will not wake up again. It was fine when i went to bed last night and now I'm back to square one! Arrgh!:evil
Sounds like a memory issue or hard drive issue. Either the hard drive is not waking from sleep mode properly or the memory is not storing properly when put in sleep mode and hence cannot retrieve.
One possibility is that iff there is an option anywhere to turn the hard drive off after inactivity then disable it, or untick that option - sometimes when hard drives are turned off after inactivity they fail to respond to wake up.

Try installing service pack 1, this is a well documented problem with vista, service pack 1 is supposed to address it.
If you google the problem there's loads of suggested fixes for it, and a knowledge base article on microsoft's site.
