Yesterday I did a test install of Ubuntu 8.10 Release Candidate on my old P3 system to see if it could be installed and wireless set up (and got working) without any cable connection to the router. I installed from the Alternate CD and then used the network manager icon (2 PCscreens one behind the other, on the top panel) to choose "Hidden Wireless Network", entered my network name (SSID) and security settings and it connected fine. Everything seems to be working well :)
