The age old story about you get what you pay for. Demon have been around for years and aren't going belly up like most ISPs!

And most people have heared of them and their reputation of being one of the best ISP's around.
The Net cannot be classes as cheap so why try and get access at unfeasably low prices, you'll only get your fingers burnt (or taken for a ride at least!)

Unfortunately true.
My time with Plus ends on Friday and I've been planning to join Demon. I tried them once before (30 day trial) at the same time I tried plus. I joined Plus because they were cheaper.
Recently I've been considering BT Connect Lite (£4 per month), but as I use the 'net about 20-25 hrs a week, I feel I'd be taking the p*ss to try and do it for £4.
I've heard people commend Demon for static IP. What are the advantages of a static IP ?

Unsure really - depending the way you look at IP addresses would determine your opinion of static IP's.
Personally I believe them to be a benefit and every account should have their own IP ady, just like a social security number.
If you ask a hacker or someone out to cause trouble then no they are a pain in the arrse as you can be traced easier.

Doesn't static IP somehow help with downloads ?
Like if a download is broken can you resume even if you don't use a download manager ?
I've heard something like this somewhere.

Indeed. The timeouts are usually quite high, thus if you get back on you often find the transfer will resume with no problems, whereas with a dynamic IP the server hasn't a clue who you were.
Apart from that, a dialup account with a static IP doesn't have many more features than that of a standard. You can run servers that people will be able to find time and time again, but on a dialup that's not too helpful. :)
static IP for *every* subscriber... I bet RIPE loves Demon.

Static IP means you can get mail by SMTP (this is possible on dynamic but complicated for the ISP to set up) provided you are prepared to run your own SMTP server. It also means as mentioned you can run your own servers. I use it so I can read all my home email collected from all my different ISPs from wherever I am by running an IMAP server on my dialup. I also have an SSH server so I can log in to a shell account and access most of the machines on my network.
Demon have just given something like 200,000 IP addresses back to RIPE so no worries there :)

200,000?! That's quite a few...

Until a couple of weeks ago every Demon account had two IP addresses associated with it as their homepages web server still accepted HTTP/1.0 requests

That's pretty inefficient...
I'm somewhat glad they saw sense in that department.

It shows just how long Demon have been in this business

They held off going to HTTP/1.1 and name based virtual hosts until they were sure that everyone had a HTTP/1.1 compliant browser (IE3 or later I think). Probably by working out when the HTTP/1.0 requests dwindled to just about nothing.
A default ****4 installation is not capable of viewing most pages on the Internet as the browser supplied is not HTTP/1.1 compatible, so I used to be able to see my homepage on Demon with it but not most other sites.

So why was my last post automatically censored. I only mentioned a version of Windows which allegedly is short for "New Technology" and it replaced it with 4 stars :(

It irritates me too. I have to refer to N(T) as the one before windows 2000 or something like that. Maybe it's because you can put "cu" before it ? :)
P.S.
As for the person who thought about joining bt connect lite, it's a shame they didn't (too late now, stopped the package).
I get 50-60 hours a week for my £4 + surftime, great value for money.
Unfortunatley though it's probably people like me that have caused them to discontinue the service.:)
