There hasn't been much discussion recently on Download Managers, so I'll just start with my personal recommendation, which is DLExpert - see
http://www.yanew.com/
although the page will look a bit odd, click on the English version in the top right corner.
The new version 0.98 is now available.
It is genuinely FREE (not shareware), and is NOT ADWARE!! which is unusual with download managers.
I've used it for nearly a year and it has just got better and better.
(If it asks you to download Chinese Language Support, just reject this request. (It didn't ask me.)

The beta version isn't adware any more.
Been my download manager ever since i started using pc's. Used to be adware but you could remove it and it still worked.

I thought I read there was a registration charge to remove ads?
Will this come back in the production version?

I use getright too!
Getright even tell you how to remove ads/spyware for an unregistered copy :)

Theres still a registration charge to remove the ads but in the beta version the ads are not spyware. There just simple banners created by getright.
Even when it was adware you could use programs like adaware from lavasoft to remove it :) or register it ;)

Free non-adware download managers seem to be few and far between. Have discovered that you can resume downloads in IE just by clicking the Go button to the right of the address bar, although this only works with HTTP, it doesn't work with FTP. For more reliable HTTP downloads, it's best to put the link to the file in your favourites, then clear the cache, then click on the link in the favourites. In the event that the computer crashes and you have to reboot, simply opening the browser and clicking on the favourite will make the download resume from where it left off. Oh, it also helps if your browser default page is set to "about:blank".
There is a freeware scripting language interpreter around called "Rebol" which allows you to make scripts to handle TCP communications. So if you know a thing or two about HTTP protocol commands, then it shouldn't be difficult to write your own download manager program, complete with resume, multiple download handling, manual cookie control, and spoofing of referrers, and spoofing of virtual host names (which is handy in the event of DNS server failure).
You can learn about how HTTP protocol works by getting Rebol to act as a TCP-relay to a public proxy server, and logging absolutely everything, then set your browser to use your own Rebol server as its proxy. Then just play with the browser for a while, general web surfing, and then look at the log files that your TCP-relay program has created.
I did say that I was going to do this a while ago, but nothing became of it. Sorry! I know it's possible, but, hey, not really that interested personally and can't be bothered. :)
I use Netzip Download demon version 3.0 Old but good. Not spyware as far as I know, never been picked up by opt out.

If they had their ads with CONDUCENT
They've packed up!! - hooray!
Aureate/Radiate are apparently also suffering
The AdWare software model is DEAD, because advertisers must be getting the message that their ads are ignored, hated, a turn-off.
PS. I thought GRC http://grc.com found NetZip Download Demon to be one of the first and worst offenders, maybe this is an earlier or later version.

Once you've purchased the software and got a valid serial number like us two did  you can download that proggie and it will remove the spyware( only if you've registered though).
Like i said though headlight software don't use Aureate anymore and theres no spyware in any of their new releases (all betas and latest oficial version).
